Holistic Lifestyle Medicine

As an academic and ambitious athlete, I have been fascinated by Pierre de Coubertin's (founder of the modern Olympic Games) statement "Mens fervida in corpore lacertoso" since my school days. This quote states that "a fiery spirit can only blossom in a muscular body" and thus sums up the age-old wisdom that a healthy body is the basis for a lively mind. In today's fast-paced world, where stress, lack of exercise, and poor diet have become the norm, it has never been more important to prioritize a holistic health approach. Holistic lifestyle medicine presents itself as a broad framework for health and well-being that takes into account the interrelationship between body, mind, and spirit. 

In contrast to the current standard model of lifestyle medicine, which is based on 6 pillars, my model includes the two additional aspects of "environmental factors" and "preventive measures".

Physical Activity: Incorporate regular exercise, whether it's cardio, strength training, or yoga, to boost cardiovascular health, mood, and cognitive function.

Social Connections: Cultivate meaningful relationships with friends, family, and community members to support mental and physical health.

Balanced Nutrition: Prioritize a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats to fuel your body and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Stress Management: Develop effective stress management strategies like mindfulness meditation and deep breathing exercises to mitigate the negative effects of chronic stress.

Preventive Measures: Take proactive steps such as regular health screenings and vaccinations to maintain health and prevent disease.

Restorative Sleep: Prioritize quality sleep to support physical, mental, and emotional well-being through adequate rest and creating a conducive sleep environment.

Substance Exposure: Be mindful of what you consume and avoid harmful substances to protect your health and well-being.

Environmental Factors: Minimize exposure to pollutants and toxins while maximizing exposure to natural elements like sunlight and green spaces to promote optimal health.

By focusing on these eight pillars, we can optimize our health and live happier, more fulfilling lives.
